Helpful Hints


The following helpful hints will keep your Icon-Septech plant running efficiently and producing clean and crystal clear water for your garden whilst minimising your environmental impact.

Use only Biodegradable, Low Phosphorous Detergent Products – Look for gentle biodegradable products and remember to read the label carefully. Many detergents are not readily biodegradable and may inhibit the bacterial action in the treatment plant. To minimise the environmental impact of machine washing, use gentle biodegradable soap products instead of commercial washing powders. 100% pure soap flakes are a great option, and can be easily incorporated into your routine. Simply dissolve the soap flakes in a small amount of very hot water before adding to your wash. Any residual soap residue or scum are a result of hard water, and can be easily rectified by adding a quarter cup of washing soda to the wash cycle.

Use Less Laundry Detergent – Try to avoid using excess detergents and cleaners - instead, give the product a little extra time to work before attacking the problem with a good quality cleaning tool.

Clean your Toilets with Vinegar to Save Money AND the Environment – It's cheap to buy, is an excellent bowl cleaner, and will not affect the bacterial levels in the treatment plant. For tough stains, leave to soak for ten minutes before scrubbing off.

Bleach and the Wastewater System don't Mix – If using bleaches (sodium hypochlorite), do not allow the wash water to enter the treatment system as it may upset the biological balance within the system.

Service your System with an Icon-Septech Service Contract – Regular professional maintenance will take the worry out of scheduling your services. A service contract will ensure that your system is fine-tuned in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines and local government guidelines.

Tank-safe Landscaping – Avoid planting larger trees and shrubs or plants with high moisture requirement near your system's tanks as their root systems could cause damage. In the irrigation area, choose plants with high moisture tolerance and nutrient requirements.

Cover your system with Household Insurance – We recommend that you add the Icon-Septech pumps to your household fusion policy. That way if electricity fluctuations damage your equipment, you may be compensated for any pump damage.

Avoid turning off your control panel or system – Your Icon-Septech system is hardwired into your electricity supply to minimise the risk of accidentally switching the system off. Turning off the power to the system will stop it operating and should be avoided wherever possible. Short interruptions, such as power outages, can be sustained, but temporarily turning off the system to save power should be avoided.

The following items MUST NEVER be placed in your wastewater system:

  1. sanitary napkins
  2. tampons or their wrappers
  3. paper nappies or liners
  4. condoms
  5. cigarette packets
  6. any foreign objects
  7. paint
  8. bleach (sodium hypochlorite)
  9. nappy soaking products

These products should be placed in the garbage with your normal refuse or alternatively disposed of.
